Everyone can do language!
Whether it’s spoken or written, digital or in real life. You use language to be understood and to understand the world around you. To be part of your family, school class, neighborhood or country.
However, one third of all Dutch children does not reach the language level required to fully participate in school and in society.
And because children are at home 70% of the time, there is a special role for parents and caretakers in the language development of children. They can talk about the old days or ask about today. In their own words, and using the language they feel at home in.
The Story Time Express aims to stimulate this by spreading ‘language fun’. During a period of 20 weeks, volunteers pay weekly visits to about 5000 families per year. With picture books in all languages and language games, they help parents to discover what they can share, and they show children what language can do for them. As a volunteer at the Story Time Express I have experienced firsthand how useful this is – and fun too!
