Cooking should not be deadly.

Before I started working at HuRis, my wife, oldest daughter and I have lived in Africa. One of the things that affected me most in the hospital where we worked, was the number of children admitted to our hospital with burns. The main cause of this was that, in the middle of their living space, they cooked on open fire. An example of how people live and cook is this Maasai lady we visited:

One third of the global population cooks indoors on open fires. This has major consequences for the environment and climate, but also for gender inequality – it is mainly women who cook. However, the greatest effect is on people’s health: cooking over a fire causes 3 million deaths every year.

Precisely because the problem is so big, the solutions are also so promising. Those who practice clean cooking not only fight against air pollution, but also against deforestation, global warming and gender inequality. In short, we are talking about a win-win-win-win solution.
